Our History

Are you ready to hear the fascinating story of the Lofts on Marion? Buckle up, because this is one historic ride!

Lofts on Marion used to be known as the Grimshaw Silk Mill, also known as Freeman Shoes building. It all started in 1887 when a plucky British immigrant by the name of William Grimshaw founded the Grimshaw Silk Mill. With a nose for innovation and a knack for quality, Grimshaw's mill quickly became one of the biggest and best silk mills in the country.

But Grimshaw wasn't just a savvy businessman; he was also a humanitarian. The Grimshaw family built an entire community around the mill, providing housing, schools, and other amenities for their employees.

During World War II, the Grimshaw Silk Mill went from making beautiful fabrics to producing parachute fabric for the US military. Talk about versatility!

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and the mill closed in 1957 due to stiff competition from overseas manufacturers. But fear not, dear reader, for the Grimshaw Silk Mill building has been repurposed as a mixed-use development, complete with offices, retail stores, and residential apartments.

And the best part? Even though the building has changed throughout the years, the NOW Lofts on Marion (aka The Grimshaw Silk Mill) building's historic architecture has been preserved. Check out our gallery to see the new renovations and the historical beauty
